What Is A Geospatial Analyst?

I came across this article that gives a good description of the roles of a Geospatial Analyst. I know that a lot of the traffic on my blog stems from people searching for a description of what a Geospatial Analyst does, so I thought I would share this. It mentions the skill sets required for a Geospatial Analyst position are environmental sciences, computer science, geography, and database design. I think this is a pretty inclusive list at a very high level (other than remote sensing, which is brushed upon later on in the article). Check it out here:

  4. Hi! Thanks for your post. I majored in Geography in undergrad, then obtained a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science. I had a fairly strong background in Computer Science, which has proven to be extremely beneficial in my work as a Geospatial Analyst. A Geography and Computer Science background is a great combination to have if you are interested in eventually starting a career in GIS. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

  5. Hello Brooke,

    I am in the Army Reserve and just finished my MOS Training (Job Training) as a Geospatial Engineer. I fell in love with it! And was wondering how I could further pursue a carreer as a Geospatial Analyst in the civilian side. Being in the reserves does not give me much time to use arc map very much or get more experience. I was wondering what you would suggest as to what college courses or college programs to take? I currently have a certificate for the Geospatial Engineer Course. So I'm not sure as to where to go from here or what school would have a good degree program.
    As you can see any advice would be useful.

    Do you work with the UAV community at all? I recently started working with a Contractor and was wondering if a Geo-spatial analyst performs any of the same tasks. Thanks for the educational tips above. I have been trying to research a Graduate degree field to enter and believe I may take your advice, however, are there any other degree fields you may recommend. Any that may also be relevant when compared to your coworkers degrees?

    First thanks again for all the info. This article is great. The company I work for has put me and one our principles in charge of looking at what GIS means to us; how we use it, what we use it for, what our clients need/want from us, etc.

    I was wondering if there was a specific list that breaks down the various skill levels (e.g. spatial analyst I, II, II, etc.) Salary.com has some stuff but we're looking for something a little more in depth.
